2018 Volvo S90 vs 2017 Volvo S90
Serving Overland Park, Olathe, KS and Kansas City, MO
The 2017 Volvo S90 won two major design awards, took home the CNET Roadshow’s Editors’ Choice award, and made it to the finals of two big Car of the Year competitions. What will the 2018 Volvo S90 do to top that?
Performance
The new Volvo S90 will gain a new hybrid edition. This powerful unit is also used by the XC90. To create 400 horsepower, it puts together a supercharged four-cylinder turbo (like you find on the T6) with dual electric motors. Since the 2017 models were successful, the rest of the performance lineup is maintaining momentum. An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated to one of two powerful engines. The 250-horsepower unit generates 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Stepping up, the T6 generates 316 horsepower. You really can’t go wrong with these three choices. Drivers will feel confidence and totally in charge of the ride.
Appearance
2018 Volvo S90 sedans will be bigger, much bigger. Volvo stretched their bodies by 4.7 inches. This new length is behind the B-pillar. That means a lot more legroom for backseat passengers. It now offers more than 40 inches, making it the leader in its segment. New amenities are available to pamper your riders. This includes rear power seats ventilation and heat. Front seats can include power-massage. Otherwise, you will find much of the high level luxury to be the same from 2017 to 2018. Volvo never falters when it comes to craftsmanship. Advanced design elements include birch wood, rich walnut, and high grade leathers in a variety of colors. Dashboards and trim wrapped in leather offer the ultimate soft touch. Improvements to the Sensus help you make even more out of the nine-inch infotainment center with Bluetooth streaming audio.
Safety
Improving on a Top Safety Pick Plus is difficult, but Volvo is doing it by adding more safety features to the roster for the 2018 model than were on the award-winning 2017. For starters, electronic eyes watch for people, cyclists, and large animals. An autobrake may step in to prevent the car from hitting these or other obstacles. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given its highest ratings to both the slow-speed and high-speed autobrake on the Volvo S90. Setting the S90 above some of its rivals, there is a run-off system that knows when the S90 is leaving the road. It attempts to turn the wheel and pull the sedan back into its lane. A drowsy driver alert and road sign recognition are also on the S90 menu. The cutting-edge Pilot Assist does more than regulate cruise control. It also incorporates semi-autonomous steering and lane keeping.
