Recharge: Plug-In Hybrid Models and All-ElectricÂ
The internal combustion engine has brought us a long way. And while it's not going anywhere anytime soon, the future of the automobile is clear, and it's electric. As alternatively powered vehicles grow more prominent, Volvo continues at the forefront with innovative hybrid powertrain options for its sedans and SUVs, and an exhilarating new all-electric compact crossover.
Volvo first entered the hybrid scene in 2013, when it launched the Volvo V60 PHEV wagon. That plug-in hybrid engine evolved into the lauded T8 powertrain, equipped on Volvo's compact and midsize sedans and SUVs. Heading into the 2021 model year, Volvo renamed the T8 to Recharge in order to maintain continuity across its initiatives. Recharge pairs a super- and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and battery pack for a total output of 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. It's available on S60 and S90 sedans and XC60 and XC90 SUVs, and offers 18 to 22 miles of all-electric range, depending on the model.
Volvo's first-ever all-electric production vehicle, the XC40 Recharge, represents a major step towards the automaker's goal that 50-percent of its lineup be electric by 2025. Motivation for the XC40 Recharge comes by way of two electric motors, one for each axle, powered by a 75 kWh battery pack. Altogether, the system churns out a hair-raising 402 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque and delivers a zero-to-60 time in just 4.7 seconds. The XC40 Recharge can travel more than 200 miles on a single charge, and a 150-kW D/C fast charger can fill an empty battery to 80% in just 40 minutes.
