2018 Volvo XC90 vs 2018 BMW X5
Serving Overland Park, Olathe, KS, and Kansas City, MO
The best vehicles in the midsize-luxury crossover SUV segment draw their popularity from their ability to deliver advanced technology, stirring performance and comprehensive safety features. Two of the leaders in this segment are the 2018 Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5. Both offer seating for 7 and all-wheel drive (standard on the Volvo), and both deliver excellent power, handling and ride. But a closer look reveals the many advantages of the XC90, including a lower price.
Performance
The 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum has an MSRP that undercuts the 2018 BMW X5 xDrive35i by $5,000, yet the Volvo delivers more power and better mileage. This Volvo is equipped with a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged I-4 that outputs 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque into an 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is 20 city/27 highway mpg. The BMW is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbo-6 that directs 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft into and 8-speed automatic. The AWD version provides 18/24 mpg. The Volvo’s available air suspension not only makes the vehicle’s ride more compliant, it can lower the height of the entire parked vehicle, or just the rear, to ease loading and unloading.
Dimensions
The XC90 is a longer, taller vehicle with a longer wheelbase, lighter curb weight, lower aerodynamic drag coefficient, higher ground clearance, larger approach/departure angles and tighter turning diameter. The XC90 (without mirrors) is wider. It also provides more rear headroom, front and rear legroom and a larger maximum payload.
Safety
Both vehicles are equipped with driver, passenger, front head curtain, knee, front side and rear head curtain airbags, but only the XC90 also provides a third-row side curtain airbag. Standard equipment on the Volvo is the semi-autonomous Pilot Assist suite of active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rearview camera, autonomous braking and rear parking sensors. The BMW offers many similar features, but several, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitor and autonomous braking are extra-cost options when you compare comparable models (T6 Momentum vs xDrive35i).
